The primary function of the Reliability Engineer is to manage and lead preventative and predictive maintenance programs in such a manner as to promote a safe, efficient operation in which quality product is manufactured.  This position requires a high level of concentration on production problems, to the maintenance response in planning to resolve them, to their actual resolution, and to prevent their recurrence.

This position has a direct impact on productivity and performance throughout the plant.  This includes proper utilization of headcount and equipment.  Managing capital projects from conception to completion, using the request for capital expenditure (RCE) process. The position also directly impacts product quality in the production operations. This position is accountable for regulatory compliance of the Maintenance operation including equipment change control. Performance can be directly measured in end results.  Examples of the potential for negative results are:  1) Poor line performance resulting in lost product or overtime required; 2) Jeopardizing a batch or a number of batches if equipment such as seamers and sterilizers, are not functioning  correctly; and 3) Poor performance could place Abbott in a position where FDA inspections or Corporate compliance Audits could cite violations of regulations that would be serious quality concerns, possibly resulting in recalls or a temporary production shutdown.

Reviews plans and monitors status of implementation for those people assigned to effort; participates in site assessments. Prepares and communicates recommendations and respective action plans to drive operational performance. Anticipates future directions. Benchmarks internally and externally.  Assists with deployment of predictive and reliability centered maintenance strategies.

Grasps complexities and sees relationships among data; determines consequences and alternatives; makes recommendations; analyzes problems from multiple perspectives. Improves maintenance processes. Recognizes and implements process improvements and cost reductions; creatively applies others' ideas.

Facilitates root cause analysis for equipment downtime. Develops and executes reliability studies and evaluations of equipment robustness. Mentors others by sharing information and providing feedback and guidance. Prepares written communication. Builds relationships. Initiates and cultivates open, honest relationships with colleagues, customers, contractors, and vendors by establishing rapport, developing an understanding of others' needs, promoting common goals, and following through on commitments.

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, science or closely related discipline is desired, or equivalent technical experience plus demonstrated competence, with a desired 3-5 years of significant engineering and/or operational experience.  Additional post-graduate education may contribute towards the desired years of experience.

Good communication skills, both written and verbal required.  Strong technical and leadership skills required.  These communications, technical and leadership skills are required due to the high degree of interaction with many levels and areas of technical matters and motivational needs of the department.
